The Romanian Academy inaugurated the ‘Cardinal Iuliu Hossu Jubilee Year’ with a tribute session, hosted in the Aula Magna Hall of the Romanian Academy.
The ‘Cardinal Iuliu Hossu Jubilee Year’ was established by Law No. 290/2023, initiated by Deputies Ovidiu-Victor Ganț and Silviu Vexler, ‘for the celebration of the life, work, personality, decisive role in the achievement of the Great Union, and efforts made to save the Jews during the Holocaust’ of Greek-Catholic Cardinal Iuliu Hossu.
Romfilatelia, institutional partner of the Romanian Academy, was invited to launch the postage stamp issue ‘Cardinal Iuliu Hossu Jubilee Year’, in the Aula Magna Hall of this first-rate cultural forum.
They paid tribute to the herald of the Great Union through speeches delivered by Acad. Ioan Aurel Pop, President of the Romanian Academy, His Excellency Mons. Giampiero Gloder, Apostolic Nuncio, His Eminence Aurel Percă, Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest, His Grace Mihai Frățilă, Bishop of the ‘Saint Basil the Great’ Greek-Catholic Diocese of Bucharest, Silviu Vexler, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, Acad. Mircea Martin, full member of the Romanian Academy, Ana Blandiana, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, Ruxandra Cesereanu, Faculty of Letters, Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj, Cristian Anița, Director General of the National Archives of Romania. The moderator was Ioan Cristescu, Director of the National Museum of Romanian Literature.
Cristina Popescu presented the postage stamp issues previously dedicated to Cardinal Iuliu Hossu, as well as the anniversary issue marking 140 years since his birth. She thanked the Romanian Academy for the invitation and expressed gratitude to the representatives of the ‘Saint Basil the Great’ Greek-Catholic Diocese of Bucharest, the Greek-Catholic Diocese of Cluj-Gherla, and the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives for their collaboration in the development of this year’s issue.
